How to Get a Band 7 IELTS Writing Task 2


Tips and advice for anyone looking to get a band 7 IELTS writing task 2, or higher, in order to ensure that you have attained a sufficient level of written English for postgraduate study. The tips and advice given focus specifically on Task 2 of the IELTS academic writing module. It is assumed that you already have a level of English that would allow you to complete undergraduate level study at an English speaking university – generally a band 6 IELTS.


First, it is essential that you are familiar with the test format and what you need to do to get a band 7 IELTS writing task 2. In writing task 2 of the academic module, you need to write an academic essay in a formal or semi-formal style using an argumentative/discursive essay format. You also need to make sure that you understand the grading criteria.

In Task 2 you will be given a topic along with a problem, argument or opinion. You need to discuss the issue or issues raised and give your own opinion, putting forward two or three main points supported by arguments, evidence and examples, taking note of the assessment criteria for the task.


Second, It is essential that you are thoroughly familiar with the assessment criteria to get an band 7 IELTS writing task 2. When marking answers examiners will focus on four areas: Task Response (you must stay on topic and engage the question directly), Coherence and Cohesion (writing needs to be well organised and linked together fluently), Lexical Resource (a wide range of vocabulary needs to be used). Grammatical Range and Accuracy (you need to pay attention to spelling, sentence structure and variation - use a variety of sentence structures). The four criteria are equally weighted.

However, all questions can be answered by producing a good argumentative/discursive essay. Use a standard 5 paragraph essay format in order to get an IELTS band 7 writing task 2. An argumentative/discursive essay can be understood as an essay that gives information and presents the writers own opinion.

10 Key Tips for a Band 7 IELTS Writing Task 2


1. Make sure you understand the question fully.

2. Key points in the question should be underlined.

3. Make a plan with 5 paragraphs, thesis statement and supporting details.

4. Stay on topic.

5. Pay attention to coherence and cohesion. Between sentences and paragraphs.

6. Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures and avoid formulaic language.

7. Check your spelling and grammar.

8. Do not copy anything directly from the question, but you can paraphrase.

9. Spend around forty minutes on your answer including planning and five minutes or so at the end to proofread your answer.

10. Make sure you write at least 250 words. You can exceed the word limit but keep it to a minimum - no more than 300. You do not get any extra marks for writing more and the more you write the more mistakes you are likely to make. Instead of writing more, use the time to proofread your answer checking for mistakes.
